Summer in Chandler is hot, and the nights don't cool off much. It's livable. You just plan around it, in your daily routine and in the house you buy.
My first August here
I flew into Arizona in August. I was 22, I had two big suitcases, and I took a cab straight to a car dealership, where I bought a car on the spot. I'm sure they saw me coming. A guy who pulls up in a cab, ready to buy, is clearly not leaving without a car. Not my best negotiation.
What I remember most is the heat. You don't really sweat. The water just goes out of you.
The real numbers
In 2025, Phoenix hit 118 degrees twice, once in July and once in August. There were 37 days at 110 or higher. The part that surprises people is the nights. The average overnight low in July was about 86.
So the heat isn't only an afternoon thing. It's your electric bill, and it's your air conditioners working all day and most of the night.
How I live with it now
I never leave the house without a water bottle and sunglasses. Ever. Some days I bring an extra oversized water bottle too.
A car with remote start is worth having here. You walk out to a car that's already cool.
I tried the windshield sunshade. It was more hassle than it was worth, and it didn't feel like it made a difference.
What to check in the house
Look for self-closing doors to the backyard. I have friends who don't have them, and I just don't get it. It's a $10 hinge. When someone runs out to the pool, the door closes behind them on its own.
Check which way the backyard faces. A yard that takes the afternoon sun is a yard you won't use much from May to October.
Ask how old the air conditioners are. Bigger homes here often run two to four of them, and they do the most work of anything in the house. I cover this and a few other things in what I check before buying a home in Arizona.
Ask for the electric bills. One 2,700 square foot home averaged about $465 a month across a full year. A 6,300 square foot home with older units ran just under $1,000 a month in summer. If you want to see how that fits with taxes, HOA and insurance, here's what it actually costs to live in Chandler.
So is it worth it?
Summer here is a line in your budget and a few new habits. Know that before you buy, not after. If you're thinking about a move, start with what to know before moving to Chandler.
